Government Shutdown impacts many of our workers at the EPA and JFK Library

Zack, an employee at the E.P.A. in Boston and a young man with a disability, stated he was told not to report to work on Monday.  Zack said his manager told him there would not be any work on Monday because of the Governmental Shutdown.  Zack, who loves his job, was unhappy about not being able to work and receive a paycheck.  Zack is one of 50,000 individuals with disabilities across the country who are currently not working because of the Government Shutdown.

In Boston WORK Inc. has 31 individuals with disabilities who are impacted by the Shutdown.  Two AbilityOne sites, the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum and E.P.A. have been closed due to the Government Shutdown.  Some of those individuals have run out of vacation time and are no longer receiving any form of payment.  These employees have no way of paying their rent, buying food and other daily necessities.   It is unclear whether these employees will receive back pay when the Government reopens.  How can we allow this to happen to individuals who depend on earning a paycheck to live?

Many individuals with disabilities depend on structure and routine, and going to work plays a role in that.  When they are unable to maintain their routine and structure it can become overwhelming.  Some of these individuals may not completely understand the reasons why they cannot go to work which can be scary to them.  What are we doing to ensure these individuals are supported during this shutdown?

Over the weekend our President stated, "This really does have a higher purpose than next week's pay," Mr. Trump said. "And the people that won't get next week's pay or the following week's pay, I think if you ever really looked at those people, I think they'd say Mr. President, keep going. This is far more important."

After speaking with many of the individuals WORK Inc. employs who are not currently working they do not agree with the Shutdown.  These individuals want to work and should be working.  It is unfair that some Government employees have to take the weight of the lack of decision making.
